Welcome
There are a number of ways Auxiliarists can contribute to the missions of the Auxiliary in the Marine Safety area. Some of the missions which involve direct involvement with the Coast Guard, but there are plenty of ways you can support our missions from anywhere in the district.
Nick Tarlson, DSO-MS
Like any Auxiliary program, your first inquiry should be through the chain of leadership and management. Your FSO-MS should be conversant with the marine safety opportunities available in your area, and your FSO-MT should be able to identify training opportunities in the area. If you or your flotilla officers need additional assistance, contact your SO-MS.

The Trident medal to be worn be members who have qualified in Marine Safety

The Trident program is a good model for the development of your skills and experience in Marine Safety. We strongly recommend you pursue your Trident qualification. But remember that the Trident program is only a guide; that your progress in marine safety will depend on your commitment and dedication to the program. Moreover, we do not want people to pursue Marine Safety qualifications unless they intend to remain active in the field, both in support of the Coast Guard and in training other Auxiliarists.

There are several prerequisites in the Trident program: Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, Initial Indoctrination to Marine Safety, Incident Command System, and Good Mate. Completion of these courses will provide you with an excellent foundation in the marine safety area.

There are currently 16 personal qualifications specifically available for Auxiliarists which will qualify you for the Trident device, along with a number of related qualifications throughout the marine safety mission area. Additionally, there are a number of qualifications used by the active duty which are also available to Auxiliarists. An overview of the principal areas of activity in our district, along with the Assistant District Staff Officer assigned to assist in advising and training in the area follows:
AUX-MEES   Marine Environmental Education Specialist
AUX-ACP     Assistant Contingency Preparedness Specialist
AUX-EK       Assistant Harbor Safety Specialist

AUX-MSAM     Marine Safety Administrative & Management Specialist

People often ask how they can become involved in marine safety programs when they live a distance from Alameda. For those Auxiliarists, it is possible to pursue the following qualifications, which will be easily adaptable to any geographical area, and will also provide a solid foundation in the missions any Auxiliarist interested in marine safety should be familiar with:
